Women's Studies Programmes in Ontario Universities. The COU Committee on the Status of Women.
Council of Ontario Universities, Toronto.
The evolution of the new field of women's studies in Ontario universities is described, identifying some trends in this evolution. Three sections examine: the development of women's studies programs in Canada; women's studies undergraduate programs in Ontario; and women's studies graduate programs in Canada. Programs at 14 colleges or universities are briefly described. Among conclusions are that most Ontario universities now offer women's studies programs responding to both the needs set out by the Royal Commission on the Status of Women (1970) and the increased enrollment of women in postsecondary institutions. A trend toward independent programs as opposed to revamping curricula in traditional disciplines is evident. Seven appendices provide information on: percentage distribution of bachelor's and first professional degree graduates by sex and major field of study in Canada, 1970-1987; female undergraduate enrollment and female faculty in Ontario universities, 1986-87; start dates of women's studies programs at Canadian universities; home disciplines for women's studies courses in Ontario universities, 1988-89; course listings for women's studies programs in Ontario universities, 1988-89; graduate women's studies programs in Canadian universities; and women's studies doctoral dissertations in Ontario universities, 1970-88. A bibliography with 77 entries is included. (SM)
