Pilot Investigation of Reliability and Validation of the Modified Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) for Hearing-Impaired Preparatory Students at Gallaudet University.

This descriptive research study examined the validity of an adaptation of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) that uses a videotape with questions in American Sign Language with a special group of hearing-impaired college students, assuming that LASSI is still reliable for this group. The study was limited to prelingually deaf students (n=23) with moderate, severe, or profound hearing loss. Average LASSI scores and certain subscales showed predictive value due to significant correlation with grade point averages (GPA) of students. When hearing-impaired students with documented moderate and severe learning problems were compared with hearing-impaired students without additional learning problems, the students with learning problems showed significant differences in the direction of lower GPA, while they showed no significant effects on LASSI scores.
