The Magic Kids: A Strategy To Build Self-Esteem and Change Attitudes toward the Handicapped.
Broome, Sadie A.
Learning magic tricks permits behaviorally and emotionally handicapped children to become magicians in the eyes of adults, their peers, and themselves. The self-contained classes of handicapped boys in grades 3 through 6 have put on numerous magic shows since 1984. Program objectives include building self-esteem, teaching team cooperation, improving group dynamics, improving organizational skills, and giving students a chance to gain positive recognition from others. This paper describing the "Magic Kids" program discusses these objectives, offers group rules for making magic work in the classroom, gives additional suggestions for teachers, and provides guidelines on giving a magic show. The magic show format used by the Magic Kids is included. (DB)
