The Effects of Christensen's Generative Rhetoric of a Sentence on the Right-Branched Free Modification of College Freshman Writing.
Davis, Wesley K.
An experimental study evaluated the writing growth of 97 college freshmen before and after instruction to determine whether direct instruction in F. Christensen's "Generative Rhetoric of a Sentence" (1967) made a significant impact on freshmen writers' use of right-branched free modification. The study used a quantitative, pretest/posttest experimental design. The experimental group of 48 students was directly taught the "Generative Rhetoric of a Sentence," but the control group (49 students) received instruction in free modification. Results indicated that the experimental group made statistically significant gains over the control group, particularly in the number of right-branched free modifiers and in the number and percentage of words used in right-branched free modification.
