Missouri Curriculum Guide for Alcohol-Related Traffic Offenders' Program.
Pierce, Don; McClain, Robert
This document contains the second edition of the Alcohol or Drug Related Traffic Offenders' Program (ARTOP) curriculum guide developed by the Missouri Department of Mental Health to reduce alcohol-related traffic offenses by presenting factual information about the physical effects of alcohol on the body and on driving skills. The materials presented in the curriculum guide are to be used in ARTOP's 10 hours of education. An introduction is followed by a section on drinking and driving which examines the magnitude of the problem and discusses driving skills, the effects of alcohol on those skills, Driving While Intoxicated laws and penalties in Missouri, and alternatives to drinking and driving. A section on the physiology of alcohol describes how the body processes alcohol; blood alcohol content and physical signs of different levels; tolerance levels; the effects of alcohol on the body, including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome; and the use of substances in combination. The section on alcohol abuse and dependency explores motivations for use, economic costs, patterns of abuse and dependency, the disease concept of alcoholism, genetic factors, the effects of alcohol dependency on the family, the family response to alcohol dependency, and types of recovery resources. A list of six concluding tasks that need to be accomplished in the concluding phases of the program are given. Sample forms, program operations, and resource materials are appended. (NB)
