The New Jersey High School Proficiency Test (HSPT) consists of reading, writing, and mathematics sections and must be passed as one of the requirements for a high school diploma. This report includes a series of tables summarizing grade 10 test results statewide for April 11-13, 1989. The results for 6,352 10th graders are given separately for those who took the test for the first time and those who were retested. Student performance data is presented by District Factor Group (DFG), an indicator of the socioeconomic status of the students in each district; by urban district; and by Regional Curriculum Services Unit region. District-by-district and school-by-school results, grouped by DFG, are also presented. Scores in this report exclude special education students, limited English-proficient students, and those whose answer folders were voided. Overall, 77.8% of the 1,787 10th graders who completed the reading section passed it; 52.3% of the 5,158 10th graders who completed the mathematics section passed it; and 63.0% of the 2,498 10th graders who completed both the essay and multiple-choice components of the writing section passed it.
