Work in Progress: The Holmes Group One Year On.
Holmes Group, Inc., East Lansing, MI.
In late 1987, the Holmes Group called for member institutions to report on their first year of progress in educational reform. These reports serve as an early benchmark for the work in progress around the country. Readers of the 71 reports received prepared analytic memos summarizing their observations; these memos serve as a principal basis for the commentary in this publication. The following areas are covered: (1) creating "integrated, extended" programs for teacher education; (2) establishing the professional studies curriculum; (3) broadening and deepening the liberal arts preparation of prospective teachers; (4) strengthening and integrating clinical experience; (5) recruiting minority students and faculty; (6) interacting with state policy on teacher education; (7) improving the quality of teaching and assessment in teacher education; and (8) first year problems and future agenda.
