A Performance Aid Solution for Completing Postsecondary Financial Aid Forms.
Felton-Sanders, Bernadette J.
The analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional development project addressing the difficulty of completing the forms needed by students to obtain grants and other financial assistance for college is presented. Most students who attend college require financial assistance from their parents and/or loans and grants that require completion of appropriate forms. Systematic techniques were applied to produce a performance aid (PA) for New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) students on academic probation who needed to complete the financial aid form, on the assumption that for some people, there is a negative conditioned response to completing forms. The (PA) developed was based on Gagne's guidelines and the suggestions of Lineberry and Kearsley. The success of the development of this PA suggests that simplified instructions can greatly facilitate completion of a standard form. The 12 appendices are: needs assessment inventory; needs assessment results; NYIT goals and training requirements; target population job description; New York State Student Financial Aid Form (FAF) for the 1988-89 academic year; FAF performance requirements and objectives; project planning; PC-Style and RightWRITER FAF readability indexes; first, second, and final versions of PA materials; and SME summative evaluation. Tables and figures are included. Contains 42 references. (SM)
