A discussion of journal writing in an English composition class at a Japanese university focuses on how, why, and with what results students were assigned the writing of a lengthy journal as a course requirement. The first part of the discussion presents the rationale behind the decision to give students the assignment. The second part describes the student participants and how the assignment was administered. The various problems encountered during the course are discussed in the third part, such as the amount of time involved in keeping or reviewing a journal, as well as solutions to the problems. The next part reports the results of an informal survey of student attitudes toward the journal assignment, and the final section summarizes the advantages of the assignment and suggests possibilities for further research.
