Accommodation Strategies for Mildly Handicapped Students.

The reference handbook is the product of an Iowa Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education project entitled "Accommodation Strategies." The project attempted to: facilitate mildly handicapped students in regular education through the development and utilization of unique educational strategies; enhance cooperative endeavors between regular and special educational personnel; modify current professional philosophies regarding the analysis of various instructional/support service models which support the least restrictive environment goal; and address present funding formula, evaluation process, and pre-referral activity intervention issues. Twelve strategies were developed and implemented in 12 Iowa schools. Separate sections describe each strategy and its implementation: (1) the alternative learning model; (2) collaborative teaching; (3) consulting teaching; (4) cooperative learning; (5) Kansas learning strategies; (6) peer tutoring; (7) the SQ3R study method; (8) student teams achievement divisions; (9) the Transitional Aide Model; (10) teacher assistance team with a paraprofessional; (11) team teaching; and (12) team teaching in English at the high school level.
