A Program To Increase the Knowledge of Middle School Students in Sexual Education and Substance Abuse Prevention.
Marged, Judith M.
This practicum was designed to increase the knowledge and awareness about sex and drugs of middle school students. The primary goal was to provide current information to the students about pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and adolescent drug abuse. A second objective was to provoke the students into thinking and acting as responsible citizens. Subjects (N=1,445) were approximately 441 sixth graders, 505 seventh graders, and 499 eighth graders. Pretests and posttests were administered to students to determine if learning had taken place through the series of lectures. Interviews were held with students and teachers in order to evaluate presentations. Another school that utilized the same material was evaluated, although the science teachers presented the material to the classes in the second school rather than having one teacher lecture to the entire school. Comparison of the results of the pretest and posttest indicated there was in increase in knowledge following the program. The evaluations indicated that both the teachers and students thought the presentations were informative and useful. The comparison of the two middle schools showed that generally the same facts were learned by the students in both schools. (Author/ABL)
