World Perspective Case Descriptions on Educational Programs for Adults: India.

Four adult education programs being conducted in India are described in the case studies in this packet. Two of the projects involve literacy; the third promotes literacy as one part of its community development program, and the fourth trains workers in hotel management and catering technology. The literacy programs are (1) development of a literacy education component as part of the Department of Adult and Continuing Education at the University of Madras and (2) provision of adult basic education for illiterate adults living in the Madras city slums. The community development program is conducted by a voluntary religious agency directed by a Canadian Jesuit priest; it seeks to help the people in Darjeeling take better care of their health, to promote problem-solving skills, and to provide literacy education using a problem-centered approach. In the fourth program, the Ministry of Tourism promotes instruction in hotel and food service technology at various levels of proficiency; graduates earn certificates, diplomas, or degrees.
