High School Proficiency Test, 1987-88. State Summary Grade 9. New Jersey Statewide Testing System.
New Jersey State Dept. of Education, Trenton.
Results are presented from the administration of the New Jersey High School Proficiency Test (HSPT) to ninth graders in April 1988. The test was administered to 69,364 students in grade 9 and to over 30,000 students in higher grades who had previously failed one or more parts of the examination. This report includes a series of tables summarizing only the grade 9 results in reading, mathematics, and writing. Comparisons of student performance include: (1) percent passing; (2) mean score; and (3) score distribution categories. Tables also compare student performance by district factor groups, urban district, and regional curriculum service units. Results are compared to student performance in 1987 and the base year for the test considered, whether 1984 or 1985. The reading section of the HSPT was passed by 93.4% of the students, an increase over the 1987 percent passing of 91%. The mathematics test was passed by 81.8%, also an increase over 1987; and 90.7% passed the writing section, a similar increase. In comparison with the base years, the percentages passing all three areas increased. Overall, there was an increase in scores at the higher end of the scale. Forty-nine tables of district and school results present study data. (SLD)
