Private Schools of the United States, Volumes 1 [and] 2. 1988 Edition.

Private schools have been a part of America's educational system since the colonial days; today private schools account for over 20 percent of all elementary and secondary schools and 12 percent of the student population. Despite the major role private schools play in educating America's children, information on these institutions has been hard to find. To fill this significant gap in knowledge, this two-volume directory, consisting of 15,000 elementary and secondary schools that represent a wide variety of denominational, philosophical, and educational priorities, was developed. Entries in the first volume are arranged alphabetically in state order with statistical tables that summarize statewide and nationwide data. In the second volume, the schools are indexed in three ways to facilitate easy identification and summarization of data. First, schools are indexed within each member association in alphabetical order. Second, schools are arranged in a listing by elementary and secondary grade level. And third, all schools are alphabetically cross-referenced. Each school included in this directory belongs to 1 of 13 private school organizations under the Council for American Private Education's auspices. Member organizations are nonprofit, subscribe to a policy of nondiscrimination in admissions, and adhere to the principle that member schools must meet high standards of excellence in academic and character development. A listing of the 13 member organizations, complete with individual accrediting and evaluation practices, is included in this directory. (KM)
