Public School Superintendents in Western Pennsylvania: An Assessment of Conflict and Coping.
Lindle, Jane Clark; And Others
This paper reports on a study designed to investigate the perceptions of conflict and coping by superintendents in Western Pennsylvania. Twenty-eight superintendents (13 former superintendents and 15 currently active superintendents) were interviewed. Triangulation was utilized to determine the credibility of the interview data. Common themes of coping and conflict were found in the references of superintendents to their personal characteristics, ethics, and needs, as well as to their career plans. The superintendents confirmed the variables of the existent political frameworks as compelling conflictors. Political frameworks posed four community types, four related board types, and four role types. Superintendents' comments indicated strong relationships between personal qualities and career plans on most of the conflict and coping dimensions. Appended is an interview protocol guide.
