Criteria of Quality in Local Television Newscasts: News Directors' and Educators' Views.
Hayes, Dona; Mitchell, John D.
A study surveyed local news directors and journalism educators to determine their criteria of quality in local television newscasts. Respondents to the survey conducted in 1982 (192 out of 635 local news directors and 46 out of 167 journalism educators) and to a later survey conducted in 1988 (85 out of 551 news directors and 70 out of 265 journalism educators) answered one open-ended question--what did respondents consider criteria for quality in television newscasts. Responses were quantified using a coding scheme involving 19 variables. Results indicated that both groups seemed to be calling for ethical journalists who can write well while providing in-depth coverage. Results also indicated that both groups in 1988 cared more about news anchors being journalists than about anchors' persona/performance skills. (Eighty-nine notes are included and one table of data is attached.) (RS)
