Educational Guidance: New Responses for Inner Cities.

This document summarizes a project which attempted to develop and evaluate the provision of educational guidance for unemployed adults, especially those from ethnic minority groups in inner city areas in the United Kingdom. This report: (1) outlines the background of the project; (2) indicates key features of the shop-front guidance unit that was established in the development stage of the project; (3) describes the role of the guidance unit in the curriculum development process; and (4) provides an account of the way in which the unit contributed to all elements of the curriculum development process. Key questions are identified for consideration by providers wishing to increase access to provision for black unemployed adults. In the final section, some conclusions are offered about the effectiveness of a guidance unit operating in an inner city area from shop-front premises, and a checklist is provided for those considering the development of inner city guidance units. The appendix includes the project information bulletin and a summary of an evaluation of the project which includes data tables on status, sex, ethnicity, age, language support, referral, training, mode of study, and minority characteristics.
