Teaching Ideas for Using the Sexuality Decision-Making Books for Teens. Title No. 500.
This document is a teacher's guide for using The Sexual Decision-Making Series for Teens, consisting of three interactive fiction books that address the following topics for young people: sexual abstinence ("Too Soon for Sex?"), birth control ("Taking Chances with Sex"), and the prevention of sexually transmitted disease ("Don't Let It Get Around"). These interactive books enable students to determine the plot line, based on decisions made by the main characters at "choice points," where readers can make the decision for the characters and view the consequences of that decision. After an introduction and rationale, the teacher's guide includes the following sections: (1) issues in teaching sensitive subjects; (2) synopses of books; (3) integration of the books into family life education and health education curricula; (4) activity ideas; (5) background information about abstinence, teen sexual activity, birth control use, and sexually transmitted disease; (6) two student handouts; and (7) three choice point maps, one for each of the three titles in the series.
