Everybody Counts. A Report to the Nation on the Future of Mathematics Education. Summary.

In response to the urgent national need to revitalize mathematics and science education, the National Research Council (NRC) has undertaken an examination of mathematics education from kindergarten through graduate study. This is a summary of a report outlining the seriousness of the situation and emphasizing how critical mathematics is for science, technology, and the economy. Sections included are: (1) "Opportunity" (stressing the importance of mathematics education); (2) "Change" (discussing an approach to reform and counterproductive influences); (3) "Transitions" (describing seven transitions that will dominate the process of change); and (4) "Action" (presenting national goals, national strategy, and actions for everyone).
