This booklet describes the assessment objectives of the sixth national assessment of science by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Chapters included are: (1) "Introduction" (describing the development process for the objectives and the purpose and elements of school science); (2) "The Assessment Framework" (discussing major categories and related aspects of the framework, and weightings for questions); (3) "The Nature of Science" (classifying the nature of scientific processes, values and principles, and scientific knowledge); (4) "Thinking Skills" (dealing with knowing science, solving problems, and conducting inquiries); (5) "Science Content Areas" (including life sciences, physical science, and earth and space sciences); and (6) "Background Variables." Participants in the development process are listed. Sample items representing cells of the framework are provided as examples of classifications and item formats to be included in the assessment.
