Staff Development for Mathematics Teachers: Assumptions To Consider.

This paper is intended to provide a basis for discussion about staff development in the mathematics education community. It is directed to those who plan staff development programs intended to improve elementary mathematics teachers' classroom practice. Discussion includes the importance of establishing program goals and considerations of the knowledge base of teachers attending the staff development program. How teachers learn, their stages of development, the amount of administrative support they receive in their schools, and the teachers' sense of efficacy are also stressed as important to program planners.
