Transition in a Preschool Specialized Education Program: Strategies for Parent Involvement.
Afable, Lourdes B.
The practicum was designed to increase parent participation in a preschool (birth to 3 years) special education program serving children with handicaps in Chicago, Illinois. The practicum was intended to provide parents with an effective and meaningful involvement in a structured program of transition services. Input from both staff and parents documented the existence of a problem in the area of parent involvement. A survey questionnaire of parents identified issues which concerned them. Two workshops were held for 36 parents on the topics of: (1) transition; (2) information sharing; (3) parent experiences in the preschool program, special education programs, and after-school programs; and (4) coping with the needs of a handicapped child. Parents also attended parent-teacher conferences. Parents rated the transition activities as highly satisfactory, but their anxiety level did not decrease. (DB)
