Audoin-Rouzeau, Stephane
The purposes of this seminar were to examine the role of teaching about the French Revolution in European secondary schools, to examine common interpretations of this historical period, and to define methods of arriving at common perceptions. This report considers: (1) selected problems in teaching about the French Revolution in various European countries; (2) the impact of the Revolution on other countries; (3) overall perceptions of the positive results of the Revolution; and (4) examples of the relationship of the French Revolution to the history of selected European countries. An appendix contains the seminar's working groups' reports on: (1) the place of the French Revolution in various countries' history syllabi; (2) important French Revolution topics and themes; and (3) a comparison of selected countries' school age groups in terms of when the history of the French Revolution is taught and which revolution-related topics are stressed. A participant list is included. (JHP)
