Vision: Communicating It to the Staff.
Bolster, Sharon J.
Vision has been identified as a critical factor in effective leadership. Communicating the leader's vision to the staff is essential to realizing the vision. This paper reports data regarding seven elementary principals who developed a vision for their schools during attendance at a Principals' Academy. Data were also obtained from follow-up interviews with the principals and a survey of their teachers. Principals completed a profile instrument and developed a school improvement plan during the academy. During the interview, principals were asked to restate their visions and list the strategies used to communicate their visions to their staffs. Teachers were asked to state their principals' visions and list the strategies they believed the principals were using to communicate the visions to them. Responses at each site were compared for congruence. Summary data are compared across cases to identify commonalities that resulted in more effective communication of vision. Implications for professional practice and administrator training are discussed. Appended are 13 references. (Author)
