Policy Implications of the Three R's of Mathematics Education: Revolution, Reform, and Research.

This paper examines the recent growth and changes in the discipline of mathematics, as well as current trends in the research on the teaching and learning of mathematics. The focus of this paper is revolution, reform, and research and their effects on school mathematics. The first section deals with revolution with regard to the teaching of mathematics and the pressure for reform as a result of inadequate schooling in this area. The second section summarizes the typical reactions of mathematics educators, educational researchers, and educational policymakers to the calls for reform. The third section discusses the importance of reliable knowledge and the information and insights that can be derived from research. A summary of key concepts is presented as well as recommendations.
