Increasing Elementary School Based Interventions for Children of Divorce by Utilizing Faculty and Parent Workshops and Developmental Student Groups.

The goal of this practicum was to increase school-based interventions for children of divorce in an elementary school. The school psychologist implemented two faculty workshops with 13 faculty members attending the first and 7 attending the second workshop, and 6-week developmental groups for grades one and two, three and four, and five and six, which included 17 students. All faculty and parent workshops and all student groups were followed up with questionnaires. Parent workshops involved 18 parents. The questionnaires for grades one and two were presented in an interview format. All single parents of the first/second grade group and fifth/sixth grade group reported that their children improved academically and/or behaviorally. Two of the four parents responding in the third/fourth grade group reported that their children improved academically and/or behaviorally; two parents felt their children did not need to improve academically and/or behaviorally. All students in the developmental groups reported increased communication and coping skills. The classroom faculty reported that their students who attended the groups improved academically and/or behaviorally. Most faculty members attending the two workshops and all parents attending the parent workshop reported increased awareness of strategies for promoting optional growth. (Author/ABL)
