Understanding Gender Equity in the Workplace.
Nunnelley State Technical Coll., Childersburg, AL.
This document discusses issues of gender equity in the workplace which are pertinent to the high school counselor. The first chapter provides guidelines for helping students to understand gender equity issues. These guidelines include asking the students if they would have the same career goals if they were of the other sex and challenging the students to name three nontraditional careers they would consider. Next, a gender equity awareness quiz for educators is presented which assesses whether or not the educator has sufficient background information to provide a non-biased classroom atmosphere. The second chapter provides facts and figures on gender equity, including definitions of gender and pay equity, Alabama workforce statistics, pay equity factsheets from the National Council on Working Women, and inroads made by women in particular jobs. Vignettes of women who entered traditionally male occupations are given in chapter 3. Chapter 4 is a resource directory of individuals, agencies, publications, and audio-visual materials on gender equity issues. The Equal Pay Act of 1963, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended by the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972, and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act are discussed. The fifth chapter discusses the involvement of Nunnelley College (Childerburg, Alabama) in gender equity issues and its policy of gender equity. (ABL)
