English as a Second Language. Adult Basic Education Curriculum Guide ABE-02. ABC's: Accountability, Basics, Citizenship

This curriculum guide provides materials for teachers who work with the limited English proficient (LEP) population. Sections I, II, and III include an introduction, the mission statement, and philosophy statement. Section IV presents characteristics of various LEP students. Section V is a guide for effective teaching of English as a second language (ESL) that includes teaching strategies and methods. Language proficiency levels are discussed in Section VI. Section VII comprises the major portion of the guide. A list of general objectives precedes materials for course development for newcomer students and for advanced beginner, intermediate, and advanced LEP students. Within each of these two sections, sequential outlines of activities are provided. For each subject in the newcomer and more advanced courses, skills are correlated with content/teaching strategies (including drills) and student evaluation suggestions. Section VIII provides materials for coping skill lessons--objectives, content/teaching strategies, and evaluative material. The lessons are designed to be used in conjunction with the basic English grammar and usage lessons. A bibliography of 49 items is appended. (YLB)
