Spinning Stories: An Introduction to Storytelling Skills.

The first section of this manual provides background on storytelling and the importance of storytelling for children, describes the essential elements of the storytelling process, and discusses the place of storytelling in the schools. Language arts and creative skills developed by storytelling are also identified. Guidelines for choosing a story, techniques for learning the story, and tips on telling the story are presented in the second section. The third section offers suggestions for developing a storytelling program and on how public library staff can set up storytelling visits in the schools. Lists of resources on storytelling, sources for good stories, and resource centers for storytelling are included. (MES)
