Private Schools in the United States--Number, Enrollment and School Size: Fall, 1983. OERI Historical Report.

An estimated 27,700 private elementary and secondary schools were operating in the United States in fall 1983. Of these schools, 35 percent were Catholic, 36 percent other religious affiliation, and 29 percent not affiliated. The source of these data is a sample selected from a list of 27,000 schools and an area sample. The response for the list sample was 1,074 of 1,176 schools (91 percent). The area sample response was 733 of 901 schools (81 percent). Tables show number, percentage, and enrollment in private schools by size of school and by religious affiliation and instructional level.
