Putting the Boys in the Picture: A Review of Programs To Promote Sexual Responsibility among Young Males.
Dryfoos, Joy G.
This document focuses entirely on pregnancy prevention and young males. It begins with a brief review of current literature on male involvement from which many of the findings and program ideas reported in the document were compiled. A short essay on the self-reported life experiences of adolescent males is followed with statistical data on the social and economic status of adolescents in the United States. The research on the determinants of adolescent pregnancy (initiation of sexual activity, use of contraception, attitudes toward pregnancy, the experience of fatherhood) is reviewed from the point of view of understanding adolescent male roles. Programs directed toward males are discussed in the areas of sex education, decision making and life planning, parent involvement, teenage peer advocate programs, teenage theater, condom distribution, male outreach and media programs, family planning clinic-based programs, comprehensive health and social services, school-based clinics, youth agencies, programs that add on pregnancy prevention, and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome prevention programs. Strategies of organizations promoting male involvement and their sources of financial support are summarized for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the American Public Health Association, the Center for Population Options, the National Urban League, the Ounce of Prevention Fund, and international programs. The final section presents preliminary recommendations directed toward enhancing the capacity and motivation for boys to become more sexually responsible. Priorities for action are included. (NB)
