Team Building through Faculty Coaching and Faculty Coaching System Guidebook.
Slicker, Russ; And Others
A description is provided of the development and implementation of a Faculty Coaching System, a systematic evaluation process, at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC). Introductory comments by Russ Slicker offer a brief history and description of MATC and a profile of MATC's well-established, stable faculty. Next, Beverly Simone discusses the faculty/administration/union dynamics involved in implementing a faculty evaluation program where no formal evaluation mechanism had existed previously, and traces the development of the Faculty Coaching System. Finally, Jim Walsh explains the coaching process, indicating that faculty members are expected to plan, implement, and evaluate their own professional growth, while their immediate supervisors or other administrators act as coaches, asking a series of open-ended questions to help faculty clarify and achieve their goals. Walsh also explains that the Faculty Coaching System operates on two tracks, with procedures and purposes differing for tenured and non-tenured faculty. Attached to the program description is a copy of the Faculty Coaching System Guidebook, which includes: (1) an introduction to the Faculty Coaching System; (2) coaching guidelines, which outline criteria for the evaluation of faculty members' contact with students, preparation for classes, instructional effectiveness, and professional development; (3) information and forms for assuring the professional growth of tenured faculty in Track I; (4) a summary of Track II procedures and forms used to make decisions concerning the continued employment of uptenured faculty; (5) a coaching verification form; (6) a description of faculty coaching system procedures; and (7) a glossary. Flow charts illustrating the system are appended. (AJL)
