The Foreign Teaching Assistant and the Office Hour.
A survey was conducted among two groups of undergraduates concerning expectations and attitudes about foreign teaching assistants and consulting teaching assistants during office hours. Two questionnaires were administered by foreign teaching assistants to linguistics and math students during the first and last week of classes, and 54 responses were analyzed. Half of the students showed negative attitudes in their expectations of foreign teaching assistants. Nearly half (48%) did not answer a question eliciting negative comments about their teaching assistants, a result which may be due to teaching assistant involvement in administration of the questionnaires. Large percentages of students in both subjects reported consulting teaching assistants regarding technical problems in assignments. Both questionnaires are appended. Contains 6 references. (KM)
