Using Proverbs and Sayings in the ESL/EFL Classroom.

The use of proverbs and other sayings in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction is discussed. The proverb is defined and its distinguishing characteristics are examined. The methods and reasons for using these characteristics today are discussed, and examples are given. The specific use of proverbs in teaching oral communication, pronunciation, reading, and cultural awareness is described and justified, and practical classroom activities focusing on each of these skill areas are provided. A list of proverbs and sayings with corresponding values and beliefs and a collection of proverbs and sayings found in newspapers and magazines are appended. (Author/MSE)
