Emergency Care Attendant Reading Manual. English for Special Purposes Training Model for Early Entry into Allied Health Occupational Programs.

This reading manual is part of the package of materials developed for use in an English for Special Purposes project that offers classes in reading, grammar, and emergency care attendant training for limited English proficient students. An official course outline and course syllabus appear first. The eight lessons provided are designed to develop vocabulary and comprehension skills. Each of the lessons includes seven exercises to reinforce the objectives presented in the lessons. Lessons two through eight contain the following exercises: predicting, studying vocabulary, applying to real-life situations, comprehending paragraphs, thinking practice, writing and imagining, and supplementary reading log and bonus words. A checklist at the beginning of each lesson allows the student to check his/her progress. Subjects covered in the lessons include understanding topics, naming topics in paragraphs, literal comprehension, medical terminology with abbreviations, finding the main ideas in different locations in a paragraph, recognizing the relationship of main ideas and details, understanding paragraphs, drawing conclusions, structure of words, critical reading, and reading rates.
