Reading Reconsidered: Literature and Literacy in High School. Academic Preparation Series Supplements.
Wolf, Dennie Palmer
A study of how literature is currently taught in high school, this book also explores how the best of current teaching practices result in greater understanding of the ways in which deeper levels of literacy can be achieved by all students in increasingly multicultural classrooms. The book is not a collection of lesson plans, but is about ideas. The eight chapters deal with the following subjects: (1) reading reconsidered; (2) making a rich and varied language environment; (3) showing students how to engage with literature; (4) encouraging students to reflect on reading; (5) reading resonantly; (6) how one reader reads; (7) the making of reading; and (8) a blueprint for a teachers' workshop or discussion. A 62-item bibliography and two excerpts from literary works are appended. (RS)
