Current Population Reports, Series P-20 n424 May 1988
This report contains annual demographic data, based on information gathered in the Annual Demographic Supplement to the Current Population Survey, on household and family characteristics for March 1987. In the interest of expediency, the analytical section that had been featured in previous annual reports since 1953 has been deleted from the 1987 report. Among the highlights of the 1987 data are the following: (1) there were 89.5 million households, a net increase of 8.7 million since 1980; (2) the proportion of households maintained by a married couple with children under age 18 has declined by 13 percentage points since 1970; (3) there were 3.19 persons per family, down 0.10 persons from the 1980 average; (4) the number of householders under 25 years of age has fallen by 1.4 million since 1980; and (5) the average net increase in the number of one-person households from 1980 to 1987 was 340,000 less than the corresponding figure for the 1970s. Data are presented on 25 tables. Appendices provide definitions and explanations, discuss the source and reliability of the estimates, and present on table calculations of standard errors for the data presented. (BJV)
