Invention is the creation of a new device or technique or the use of some particular phenomenon to achieve a given result. Examples of technological invention can be found at all times and in all places of human history. This paper chronicles the history of invention and provides references to materials that discuss the socio-cultural, economic, and technological requirements necessary to stimulate and foster the growth of creativity and invention. Emphasis is on references to individual acts of discovery and invention; research directed and financed by institutions is covered only generally. This publication is not intended to be a comprehensive bibliography but is designed to put the reader "on target."
