In Search of Academic Excellence: Samples of Experience.

Improved teaching performance, changes in teaching methods, and changes in staff/faculty development are discussed. For each "sample of experience" emphasis is placed on student learning, assessment of student performance, and the learning experience of the individual student. Improved teaching performance requires institutional policies and their implementation in deeds rather than words. Changes in teaching methods include optimization of diagnostic testing, mastery learning, problem solving, and discussion techniques. These changes should involve the teacher and student in problem solving. Changes in faculty/staff development reflect movement toward the professionalization of departments and universities in a context that offers freedom of thought and control of quality. A critical issue is the quality of management at the institutional, departmental, and personal level. 90 references. (SM)
