Building Communities: A Vision for a New Century. A Report of the Commission on the Future of Community Colleges.
American Association of Community and Junior Colleges, Washington, DC.
Resulting from an 18-month study of the history, current status, and future of the two-year college, this report analyzes and presents recommendations concerning all major aspects of the comprehensive community college. Part I advocates the development of a clearer and more sophisticated definition of the mission of the community college, proposing "Building Communities" as a new rallying theme. Part II underscores the obligation of community colleges to serve a diversity of students and highlights the roles of instructional faculty as mentors and scholars. Part III sets forth four academic goals to be pursued within the community college curriculum, i.e., literacy for all students, a core of common learning, preparation for work, and education for lifelong learning. Part IV offers recommendations for ensuring quality instruction through active and collaborative learning, rewards for teaching excellence, and a new perspective on evaluation. This section also urges community college educators to accept the challenge of using technology effectively to improve learning, reduce attrition, and encourage innovation. Part V considers noninstructional ways of "building community" on-campus through orientation programs; student support services; efforts to break down barriers between students based on age, race, or ethnicity; development of global/international awareness; and service projects in the community. The last two parts explore ways community colleges can strengthen their connections with public schools, senior colleges, and employers, and examine the leadership requirements of the community college of the future.
