Fall, 1987 Applicants: A Profile of Matriculants and Non-Matriculants. Institutional Research In-Brief #40.

As of September 10, 1987, 7,387 students had applied for admission to the Community College of Philadelpia (CCP) for the fall 1987 semester. Less than 65% of the applicants were enrolled in CCP courses after the first week of the term. A comparison of the characteristics of the matriculants and non-matriculants revealed: (1) of the non-matriculants, 49.1% were Black, 30.4% were White, and 6.3% were Hispanic, while 42.6% of the matriculants were Black, 41.2% were White, and 5.1% were Hispanic; (2) age differences between matriculants and non-matriculants were slight; (3) applicants from lower socioeconomic backgrounds made up over 50% of both the matriculant and non-matriculant groups and were less likely to matriculate than applicants from higher socioeconomic backgrounds; (4) applicants who were accepted into their chosen major were more likely to matriculate than those who were not; (5) General Studies and Business applicants were more likely to matriculate than not matriculate; (6) students who applied closer to the start of classes were more likely to matriculate than students who applied earlier in the year; and (7) matriculants received higher placement test scores than non-matriculants.
