School Climate Improvement: Leadership and Process.
Howard, Eugene R.
Subtitled "Five Case Studies and Three Snapshots," this book illustrates what occurs in measurable terms when participants in the schooling process work cooperatively to improve school climate. In addition, the activities that are described reflect how to achieve the climate objectives of the schooling process--satisfaction and productivity. The first five chapters are case studies of successful school climate improvement efforts. Chapter six, "Three Snapshots," contains briefer descriptions of school climate improvement efforts, and chapter seven summarizes the implications of the case studies. Common threads running through all the projects are the following: (1) involvement supplemented top-down governance structures; (2) staff development was linked to specific school improvement efforts; (3) efforts were frequently measured and reported; (4) leaders shared excitement and positive enthusiasm; and (5) missions or goals were clearly articulated. The leaders of the case study schools shared a common process that included: (1) forming a management team; (2) collecting base-line data; (3) raising staff's, students' and parents' level of awareness; (4) assessing and prioritizing; (5) forming and managing a task force; and (6) doing a summative evaluation. Tables and figures distributed throughout the chapters provide background material; five appendixes conclude the book. (MLF)
