Profile of the In-Service Training Needs of New Jersey Guidance Counselors: Results of a Survey 1986-1987.
Schwaber, Ilene; Genetta, Beverly
One of the primary objectives of the New Jersey Vocational Education Resource Center Guidance Outreach Project was to develop and administer a statewide survey to all New Jersey school guidance counselors to assist in determining program and resource needs. A needs assessment instrument, Issues of Importance to Guidance Counselors for the 1990s, was completed by over 200 counselors from more than 140 schools in New Jersey. The instrument was divided into four categories: general issues, the role of the counselor, specific issues, and new ideas for programming. Counselors ranked the issues in terms of their importance and were asked to list other issues of importance under each category and to supply demographic information. This document reports results of the survey, providing tabulations for each issue listed in the four categories. Raw scores and percents are given for each item. Additional issues, not listed on the survey but mentioned by respondents, are included in the results, as are suggestions by individual counselors for new ideas in programming. The data is then interpreted, conclusions are drawn, and recommendations are given. The survey instrument, a list of schools responding, and a list of respondent job titles are appended. (NB)
