Recognition and Intervention of Interfering Test Anxiety: An Annotated Bibliography.

An annotated bibliography of 33 studies on recognition of and intervention into test anxiety (TA) for elementary school students (grades 1 through 8) is provided, and the research results are analyzed. Focus is on increasing the ability of educators to recognize students experiencing TA and to examine methods of reducing its effects. A basic premise is that students experiencing TA do not perform to their potential, resulting in an underestimation of their abilities by educators. The bibliography covers visible and invisible indicators of TA and methods of intervening to reduce or eliminate TA. The intervention methods include adaptations of the testing situation, learning strategies, test-wiseness instruction, and coping skills instruction. The annotated titles are listed alphabetically by author within each indicator and method section. The bibliography does not cover cultural variables, differences related to age and gender, or physiological effects. A glossary of terms is included. (TJH)
