The Teaching Assistant Program offers a course alternative designed to attract talented high school students to careers in education. This individually tailored course offers an expanded academic program to secondary students in several subject areas that have critical teacher shortages. It introduces them to the many facets of the teaching profession and provides them with practical experiences in instruction at the secondary level. Currently, the target areas are foreign language, fine arts, and science. This guide to the program provides information on salient features of the program, such as: (1) advantages of the program to administrators, teachers, and students; (2) selected content areas; (3) program promotion; (4) selection of faculty and students; (5) screening procedures; (6) scheduling; (7) program administration and coordination; (8) guidelines for structuring the curriculum; (9) generic activities; and (10) specific activities.
