Incorporating Strategies to Enhance Creative Dramatic Ability of Primary Gifted Students.
Horst, Alice S.
A practicum was conducted by a teacher of gifted students in a rural northeastern state in order to develop, implement, and evaluate developmental strategies enhancing dramatics for gifted students attending primary school. Five creative dramatic classroom activity areas were provided for students. Classroom areas were designated for: (1) rhythmic activities; (2) the dramatization of stories; (3) involvement in individual characters; (4) pantomime; and (5) building of a story. Students gathered in three small groups for a period of 2 and one-half hours each week. The groups contained students from first, second, and third grades. The Horst Creative Dramatic Scale, a 6-item, 5-point scale, was devised for use in evaluating each creative skit or story that students invented. Evaluation with the 25-item Pre-Post Horst Attitude Survey indicated that all 16 primary gifted students who participated in the practicum showed an increase in their attitude responses towards creative dramatic activities. Related materials, such as a detailed discussion of the children's dramatic activities, are appended. Early in the summer, students in the several groups performed their skits, scenes, or plays for one another. (RH)
