Association of Research Libraries, Washington, DC. Office of Management Studies.
This kit and flyer produced by the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center of the Association of Research Libraries provides documents submitted by 14 universities that are used in the performance evaluation of professional library staff. Commentary based on a thorough review of documents submitted by 60 libraries includes an overview of the responses; a discussion of criteria used in making qualitative judgments; appraisal materials and guidelines used; peer and merit increase review; and trends and issues. Tabulated survey results are followed by documents arranged in three categories: (1) Overviews of Procedures--University of California at Los Angeles, Texas A&M University, University of Oregon, University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; (2) Peer Review--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Kansas, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; (3) Merit Increase Review--University of California at Riverside, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Stanford University, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and Kent State University. A number of the documents include copies of forms used in the evaluation process, and a 10-item bibliography is provided. (EW)
