American Poetry and the Sea. Ocean Related Curriculum Activities.
Moore, Cecelia; Peterson, Peggy
The ocean affects all of our lives. Therefore, awareness of and information about the interconnections between humans and oceans are prerequisites to making sound decisions for the future. Project ORCA (Ocean Related Curriculum Activities) has developed interdisciplinary curriculum materials designed to meet the needs of students and teachers living in Washington State. Each activity packet provides the teacher with a set of lessons dealing with a particular topic related to the oceans. Included are student worksheets, lesson plans, and a bibliography. This activity packet designed for grades 10-12 presents a variety of poems about the sea, written by American poets. One section deals exclusively with poems by Pacific Northwest poets. Students are exposed to many different poetic responses to the sea and are expected to read, understand and discuss each selection. A major purpose of this unit is to make students aware of our marine environment. Other purposes are to help students become familiar with the various techniques poets use to create their poetry and to introduce students to poetry as an art form to be experienced and enjoyed. (TW)
