Six-Year Ukrainian as a Second Language Program, Grade 12 Teaching Unit.
The teaching unit provides materials for the sixth year of the six-year secondary school curriculum in Ukrainian as a second language. It explores the themes of spring and the Ukrainian-Canadian wedding. These themes form the cultural context for a relatively comprehensive study of the dative case. The unit is designed to stand alone, with additional cultural material and exercises to be used as needed. Its linguistic and cultural objectives include communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, the dative case, development of vocabulary relating to the family, occupations, agriculture, and shopping, and transmission of information about letter writing, invitations, Ukrainian-Canadian wedding customs, and the history of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. The unit has five sections, each with a subtheme and containing text, a vocabulary list, comprehension and grammar exercises, and related activities. An introductory section provides information and suggestions for teachers. A list of references and materials related to the wedding are appended. (MSE)
