This guide was developed around subject matter objectives designed to implement the program goals of: (1) acquiring knowledge and understanding based on concepts, generalizations, facts, and vocabulary derived from the social sciences; (2) acquiring intellectual skills and abilities; (3) clarifying values and beliefs; and (4) participating in activities individually and in groups. The content for the elementary grades (K-6) is organized according to the concepts and generalizations derived from the social sciences. Subjects for grades seven and eight are Ohio history, world geography, and U.S. history. High school courses are: (1) U.S. government; (2) U.S. history; (3) consumer education; (4) economics; (5) human behavior; (6) public education; (7) sociology; (8) world geography; (9) world history; and (10) world religions. The world religions course introduces the major religions of the world and describes the ways each influences a country and people that adhere to its beliefs. The world history course is designed to provide an understanding of the world's major cultures. The consumer education course introduces skills and abilities to help students make economic decisions.
